India’s chip design ecosystem is currently experiencing a surge of confidence, buoyed by accelerated policies aimed at bolstering both design and manufacturing sectors. This optimism was palpable at the recent India Electronics Week held in Bangalore, where industry insiders showcased positive developments. In an exclusive interview with EE Times, Madhusudan G.S., CEO and co-founder of InCore, provided insights into India’s aspirations in chip design, highlighting the country’s potential to emerge as a global leader in innovation.
Originating from the Shakti program, InCore is a processor startup at the forefront of this movement. Madhusudan G.S. discussed the success of the Shakti processor project, which has cultivated a world-class processor architecture team in India. He envisions a future where India becomes a hub for innovation and intellectual property creation, with manufacturing activities of slightly lower value being outsourced elsewhere.
A key focus for India, according to Madhusudan G.S., is to demonstrate its capability to conceptualize, design, manufacture, and distribute products globally. This requires nurturing startups that can generate innovative products, alongside educating individuals on the intricacies of product conceptualization.
Furthermore, he shed light on the shortcomings in current chip design practices, pinpointing the absence of effective product management as a critical issue. In response, InCore aims to revolutionize and democratize the system-on-chip (SoC) development process, with the ambitious goal of reducing the time required to bring a product from concept to market-ready to just three months.
InCore’s approach is centered around leveraging the RISC-V architecture to streamline and simplify SoC building, with the ultimate objective of significantly reducing the human element involved in the process. By doing so, InCore aims to make chip design more accessible and efficient, paving the way for India to solidify its position as a formidable player in the global semiconductor industry.
